DISAPPOINTING START FOR INTERMEDIATE CHAMPIONS

Wednesday May 8th 2019
Masita SFC Round 1

Full time: St. Michaels 0-09, Na Fianna 1-10,
Half time: St. Michaels 0-05, Na Fianna 1-07.

A goal midway through the opening half helped Na Fianna to victory over St. Michaels in this first round match in very wet conditions in Baconstown on Wednesday evening.
The home side got off to a flying start with two points in the opening minute, Sinéad McCormack pulled one back for St. Michaels a minute later but that proved to be a false dawn as the home side controlled matters for the next 20 minutes putting 1-5 on the board without reply. St. Michaels rallied for the final 10 minutes of the half with Seona Lynch (2), Alicia Curtis (1) and McCormack all getting on the scoresheet, however Na Fianna held a 1-7 to 0-5 lead at the short whistle.

Conditions didn’t help matters in the second period as both sides struggled for scores, Seona Lynch knocked one over from a free on 34 minutes, this was soon cancelled out by the home side, another great effort from Lynch from play at the end of the third quarter gave some hope of a revival for the travelling supporters but it wasn’t to be as the Na Fianna girls closed out their scoring adding a further two points from play. Marion Farrelly and McCormack completed the scoring for St. Michaels in what was a disappointing display for the Intermediate champions who also had Farrelly sent to the line shortly before the long whistle.
