LADIES BOW OUT OF LEINSTER CHAMPIONSHIP

Leinster Football Championship.
St. Michaels 0-5, St. Conleths (Laois) 2-8.
Saturday September 18th 2010 in Carlanstown.

St. Michaels bowed out of the Leinster championship to a much stronger St. Conleths side from Co. Laois in this well attended first round match played under very wet conditions in Carlanstown on Saturday afternoon last.
Both teams found it difficult to come to terms with the weather conditions which resulted in a very low scoring first half and points from St. Michaels duo Megan O’Brien and Fiona Nevin left the home side only 2 points adrift at the break 0-2 to 0-4.
St. Conleths were first out of the blocks in the second half and registered 2 points in as many minutes before substitute Gillian Bennett registered a point on 35 minutes to leave 3 points between the teams but it was in the 45th minute that the winners took control when a point was quickly followed by a sloppy goal, they hit the net again 4 minutes later to put the game beyond doubt. Megan O’Brien and Gillian Bennett added 2 further points for St. Michaels whose young team can be proud of their achievements in 2010.
Sinéad McCormack, Edwina Olwill, Áine Fagan, Rachel Lynch, Gillian Bennett and Mary Clinton tried hard for St. Michaels.

St. Michaels team & scorers:
Edwina Olwill, Therese O’Brien, Mary Clinton, Fiona Drew, Katie Reilly, Mary Smith, Rachel Lynch, Sinéad McCormack, Aine Fagan, Leanne Lynch, Megan O’Brien 0-2, Fiona Nevin 0-1, Laura McCabe, Aisleen Regan, Alisha Curtis.

BRAVE EFFORT FROM ST. MICHAELS LADIES IN SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP

2011 Ladies Senior Championship
Full time: St. Michaels 5-10, Boardsmill 4-14.
Half time St. Michaels 2-6, Boardsmill 3-10.
Monday June 27th 2011 in Martry.

St. Michaels began their senior campaign with a one point defeat to Boardsmill in this cracker of a match played in Martry on Monday evening last. The supporters from both sides got value for the €5 admission fee after both teams gave it their all with Boardsmill on top in the first half and St. Michaels playing as if their lives depended on it in the second half.

St. Michaels went into and early lead and were 1-3 to 0-2 up after 10 minutes thanks to a well taken goal from Megan O’Brien on 3 minutes and early points from Aisleen Regan, Lisa Keenan and Sinéad McCormack. Boardsmill then composed themselves and in a 10 minute spell recorded 1-8 on the score sheet, their goal coming after 16 minutes of play, St. Michaels replied with theirs and Megan O’Brien’s brilliantly taken second goal to leave them trailing by 3 points on 20 minutes. Alana Kernan brought off some fine saves in the St. Michaels goals but she was powerless to prevent Boardsmill going on to stretch their lead to 3-10 to 2-6 at the interval with their 3rd goal coming on the stroke of half time after Lisa Keenan 0-2, and Aisleen Regan 0-1 completed the first half scoring for St. Michaels.

Peter Murtagh & Christy Regan’s half time team talk and the second half introduction of Gillian Bennett, Anna McQuaid and Leanne Lynch worked wonders for St. Michaels as they charged out of the blocks for the second half after having been hit a sucker punch immediately after the re-start when Boardsmill hit the back of the net for the 4th time to leave 10 points between the sides. A great overall team performance seen them reduce that deficit to 3 points 4-8 to 4-11 by the 48th minute. Both sides then exchanged points and when substitute Leanne Lynch added St. Michaels 5th goal on 56 minutes to reduce the margin to just two points it set the game up for an exciting finish. Boardsmill were held scoreless for the last 6 minutes of play and when Gillian Bennett popped over a free to leave just the minimum between the sides, a draw looked probable and would have been a fair result, however time ran out on St. Michaels and their gallant second half recovery but they can be proud of this great performance in what is the first taste of football in the senior ranks for the majority of these young St. Michaels ladies.

St. Michaels team & scorers:
Alana Kernan, Elaine Dolan, Fiona Drew, Gillian Curtis, Rachel Lynch, Sinead McCormack 0-1, Niamh McCormack, Lisa Keenan 0-3, Fiona Nevin, Megan O’Brien 2-0, Aine Fagan, Edwina Olwill 1-0, Sharon Mooney, Aisleen Regan 0-4, Alicia Curtis.
Subs:
Gillian Bennett 1-2 for Sharon Mooney, Anna McQuaid for Gillian Curtis, Leanne Lynch 1-0 for Alicia Curtis.
