TRIM

ST. MICHAELS ARE TRIMMED BACK IN CORTOWN

Saturday August 24th 2019, IFC Group B, Round 4
Full time: St. Michaels 3-07, Trim 2-13,
Half time: St. Michaels 1-03, Trim 2-10.

Efficiency in front of the posts in the opening half propelled Trim to victory in this IFC fourth round match in Cortown on Saturday evening last, however had St. Michaels played the first half as they did the second, the result could have been so different.
Trim could not have asked for a better start as they went 1-5 to 0-1 in front after only nine minutes play, St. Michaels, who lined out without their influential forward Oran Meehan opened their account in the seventh minute with a Ciaran Lynch point, Shane McDonnell followed up with a good long range effort four minutes later however that score marked the start of a 15 minute barren spell for the Saints and they conceded 1-4 as their two back lines received a roasting from the Trim forwards. Hemmed in and a wall of red in front of them St. Michaels suffered dearly as Trim managed to keep them at arms length while keeping the scoreboard ticking to go 2-5 to 0-2 in front after 25 minutes play, their second major coming on 21 minutes. A Shane McCormack free on 26 minutes gave the St. Michaels lads some respite and when McDonnell rattled the net from the penalty spot a minute later following a foul in the square on Ray Reilly it improved the look of the scoreboard for his side as they went in at the break trailing 1-3 to 2-10.

Shane McDonnell floated over the opening score of the second half however it was the half time introduction of Ronan Lynch that kick started the St. Michaels revival as his presence around the middle third had an immediate effect as his foraging and deliveries into his forwards paid off handsomely. Team captain Sam Briody led by example and got on the end of an up-field move for a well worked point, Trim replied immediately with a point and from a move started with Darren O’Connell’s resultant kick-out Patrick Tobin latched on to a loose ball at the other end of the pitch to blast to the back of the net after some good work by Harry Dunne and Ray Reilly.

Neither side troubled the scoreboard attendant for the next 10 minutes and it was the industrious Tobin who was bearing down on goal when he was hauled to the ground for his sides second penalty which McDonnell duly converted for a three point game 3-6 to 2-12 in favour of Trim with just 4 minutes of normal time remaining. Trim went back up field to register only their third and final score of the half while the St. Michaels lads kept plugging away at the opposite end however they could only manage a further point from a free by Ciaran Lynch before time ran out on their valiant effort.

St. Michaels team and scorers:
Darren O’Connell; Ben Reilly, Sam Briody (0-1), Ciaran O’Reilly; Harry Dunne, Matthew Halpin, Alan Reilly; Mark Stafford, Paddy Clarke; Shane McDonnell (2-2), Ray Reilly, Shane McCormack (0-2); Paddy Tobin (1-0), Cian Sheridan, Ciaran Lynch (0-2).

Seneschalstown

A BAD DAY AT THE OFFICE

Friday April 26th 2019,
AFL Division 2, round 7
Full time: St. Michaels 1-07, Seneschalstown 5-19
Half time: St. Michaels 1-06, Seneschalstown 3-05.

Two clubs moving in opposite directions met in round 7 of the P.S. Supplies division 2 league in Seneschalstown on Friday evening last and that stark reality was reflected in the final scoreline as table toppers Seneschalstown reeled off 2-14 to St. Michaels single point from a free in the second half to inflict the fifth defeat of the campaign on the visitors.

Oran Meehan pointed in the first minute for St. Michaels, however that lead lasted all of two minutes when Seneschalstown drove the first of their five majors past the hapless Daithí Regan who cut his teeth playing in front of goals rather than in them, as he stood in for the regular ‘keeper Darren O’Connell who was injured.

In the following 20 minutes Seneschalstown playing into the road end added a further 1-5 to just a point from Davy Lynch for St. Michaels to lead by 2-5 to 0-2. St. Michaels then had their best spell of the match when they added a point apiece from Ciaran Lynch, Matthew Halpin, Shane McCormack and Oran Meehan before Davy Lynch got on the end of a good move involving Meehan and McCormack to rattle the net in the 30th minute, however the home side went straight back up field to goal for the third time for a 3-5 to 1-6 interval lead.

It was all one way traffic in the second period as Seneschalstown added a further 2-14 with ease as Davy Lynch added his sides only score of the half, a point after 41 minutes and to cap a bad night St. Michaels had to finish the game with 14 men as Oran Meehan was sent for an early shower after receiving a red card on 52 minutes.

St. Michaels team and scorers:
Daithí Regan; Christopher Drew, Sam Briody, Ben Reilly; Paddy Clarke, Daithí O’Reilly, Ciaran O’Reilly; Davy Lynch (1-2), Matthew Halpin (0-1); Shane McCormack (0-1), Ray Reilly, Lee Morris; Oran Meehan (0-2), Shane McDonnell, Ciaran Lynch (0-1).

Na Fianna

DISAPPOINTING START FOR INTERMEDIATE CHAMPIONS

Wednesday May 8th 2019
Masita SFC Round 1

Full time: St. Michaels 0-09, Na Fianna 1-10,
Half time: St. Michaels 0-05, Na Fianna 1-07.

A goal midway through the opening half helped Na Fianna to victory over St. Michaels in this first round match in very wet conditions in Baconstown on Wednesday evening.
The home side got off to a flying start with two points in the opening minute, Sinéad McCormack pulled one back for St. Michaels a minute later but that proved to be a false dawn as the home side controlled matters for the next 20 minutes putting 1-5 on the board without reply. St. Michaels rallied for the final 10 minutes of the half with Seona Lynch (2), Alicia Curtis (1) and McCormack all getting on the scoresheet, however Na Fianna held a 1-7 to 0-5 lead at the short whistle.

Conditions didn’t help matters in the second period as both sides struggled for scores, Seona Lynch knocked one over from a free on 34 minutes, this was soon cancelled out by the home side, another great effort from Lynch from play at the end of the third quarter gave some hope of a revival for the travelling supporters but it wasn’t to be as the Na Fianna girls closed out their scoring adding a further two points from play. Marion Farrelly and McCormack completed the scoring for St. Michaels in what was a disappointing display for the Intermediate champions who also had Farrelly sent to the line shortly before the long whistle.

St. Michaels team & scorers:
Clodagh Corcoran; Marita Rogers, Áine Sheridan, Laura Halpin; Emma McDonnell, Hayley Doyle, Lorraine Curtis; Claire Halpin, Megan O’Brien; Alicia Curtis (0-1), Erin Lynch, Seona Lynch (0-4, 2f); Marion Farrelly (0-1), Yvonne Farrelly, Sinéad McCormack (0-3).

Oldcastle

OLDCASTLE PULL AWAY IN SECOND HALF

Wednesday May 15th 2019
Masita ladies SFC Round 2

Full time: St. Michaels 1-09, Oldcastle 2-17,
Half time: St. Michaels 0-06, Oldcastle 1-05.

St. Michaels and Oldcastle played out an entertaining and competitive opening half of this Masita SFC match in Carlanstown on Wednesday evening last in which both sides had their spells in the ascendancy, however the second half proved to be a different story altogether as Oldcastle proved that they had too many weapons all over the field for the home side to contain.

Sinéad McCormack cancelled out two early points from Oldcastle but the visitors struck for their opening goal on nine minutes, both sides traded points for the remainder of the half with Seona Lynch (2), Megan O’Brien (1) and Alicia Curtis (1) on target for the home side however that earlier goal gave Oldcastle a two point advantage at the interval, 1-5 to 0-6.

A Sinéad McCormack point 20 seconds after the re-start was just the lift the St. Michaels girls required but Oldcastle replied with three points of their own in as many minutes, Seona Lynch reduced the deficit by one on 37 minutes but for the next 12 minutes Oldcastle could do no wrong as they added 1-5 to the scoreboard for a 1-13 to 0-8 lead with 12 minutes of the half remaining. The second half effort of the St. Michaels girls couldn’t be questioned but they never quite got into the same flow they were in in the opening period as the Oldcastle girls completely dominated and the game was put to bed when they recorded their second major on 50 minutes and they added a further four points before the final whistle for a comprehensive victory.

St. Michaels team & scorers:

Sarah Bradley; Marita Rogers, Áine Sheridan, Laura Halpin; Shauna Harten, Hayley Doyle, Lorraine Curtis; Claire Halpin, Megan O’Brien (0-1); Alicia Curtis (0-1), Erin Lynch, Emma McDonnell; Seona Lynch (1-4), Yvonne Farrelly, Sinéad McCormack (0-3).

Moynalvey

FARRELLY IN TOP FORM

Thursday March 21st 2019
BFL Division 2, round 3

Full time: St. Michaels 4-05, Moynalvey 0-14,
Half time: St. Michaels 1-02, Moynalvey 0-08.

A brace of second half goals from the big target man Jamie Farrelly playing at full forward helped St. Michaels seal the points with their opening victory of this campaign over a determined Moynalvey side in a blustery Carlanstown on Thursday evening last.
Although Farrelly opened the scoring with a point in the opening minute it was Moynalvey who dictated the possession throughout the opening 30 minutes and built up a 0-8 to 1-2 interval lead. Ben Farrell got St. Michaels second point on 6 minutes but their supporters had to wait until the 28th
minute for their next score when Farrelly put Justin McPhillips through for the opening goal of the match.

Moynalvey extended their lead with a point 30 seconds into the new half, however Jamie Farrelly got the first of his two majors on 34 minutes to reduce the deficit to just a point but the visitors sent over a further two unanswered points to stay three in front. Farrelly split the posts with his second minor on 46 minutes which was soon cancelled out by the visitors, however the St. Michaels lads kept pumping high balls into Farrelly who plucked them from the night sky with ease, turning and posting one under the crossbar and one over it to put his side one point to the good with 8 minutes remaining on the clock. Moynalvey kept plugging away and their efforts were rewarded with two further points to leave just two between the sides with a minute remaining, however a point from the hard working Paddy Clarke in injury time settled the nerves for the home side and secured the points.
Along with the scorers Daithí O’Reilly, Gavan Sweeney, Ben & Ray Reilly were others to impress for the home side.

St. Michaels team & scorers:
Gavan Sweeney; Brian Reilly, Daithí O’Reilly, Scott Doyle; Harry Dunne, Mark Stafford, Ciaran O’Reilly; Shane McCormack, Ben Reilly; Paddy Tobin, Paddy Clarke (0-1), Ray Reilly; Ben Farrell (1-1), Jamie Farrelly (2-3), Justin McPhillips (1-0).

St. PATS

GREAT WIN FOR ST. MICHAELS

Sunday March 24th 2019,
AFL Division 2, round 6

Full time: St. Michaels 0-14, St. Pats 0-11,
Half time: St. Michaels 0-07, St. Pats 0-03.

St. Michaels led from pillar to post to pick up an all-important second win of the season when they defeated St. Pats in a close and entertaining contest at a blustery Carlanstown on Sunday morning. The home side built up a four point lead in the first half and although they got pushed back for spells after the interval, they stood firm and turned in an impressive overall performance and were deserving winners in what proved to be a keenly contested encounter.

Ciaran Lynch opened the scoring with a pointed free after Oran Meehan was fouled on three minutes, both players then shared a point apiece to go 0-3 to 0-1 ahead after 12 minutes play. The strong swirling cross wind made scoring difficult for both sides, however it didn’t affect Shane McDonnell who put a brilliant effort over from a ’45 to put three between the sides. St. Pats pulled two back from frees but that completed their tally for the opening half. Meanwhile Lynch and McDonnell posted a further three minors between them to lead by 0-7 to 0-3 at the break.

St. Pats were first out of the blocks in the second half with a point in the opening minute, Ciaran Lynch replied with two points, one from play and one from a free. St. Pats replied from a free, then substitute Peter O’Connell sent an inch perfect pass across the width of the pitch to Ciaran Lynch who duly popped it over the crossbar for a five point lead. A great run from Meehan ended with him posting his second point of the game on 40 minutes. The following 10 minutes saw St. Pats enjoy their best spell of the match as they sent over 4 points without a reply from the home side to leave it a two point game.
Another Lynch free settled the St. Michaels nerves and with some brilliant defending from the St. Michaels backs and especially Daithí O’Reilly, Christopher Drew, Davy Lynch, Matthew Halpin and Paddy Clarke, the St. Pats attacks were well and truly thwarted.
Then a great move started by O’Connell, who moved it to McDonnell and finished by Meehan put four points between the sides, but again St. Pats hit back with two of their own to reduce the deficit to just two points, however there was only time for one more score from the St. Michaels corner forward Oran Meehan which capped a fine performance from him.

St. Michaels team and scorers:
Darren O’Connell; Christopher Drew, Daithí O’Reilly, Ciaran O’Reilly; Ronan Lynch, Paddy Clarke, Ben Reilly; Matthew Halpin, David Lynch; Paddy Tobin, Cian Sheridan, Ray Reilly; Oran Meehan (0-4), Shane McDonnell (0-3), Ciaran Lynch (0-7, 5f).

Dunboyne

ST. MICHAELS LADIES NO MATCH FOR DUNBOYNE

Tuesday March 26th 2019
Ladies FL Division 1, Round 1

Full time: St. Michaels 2-07, Dunboyne 3-22,
Half time: St. Michaels 1-04, Dunboyne 2-09.

The St. Michaels ladies suffered a heavy defeat to visitors Dunboyne in their opening game of this seasons division 1 campaign in balmy conditions in Carlanstown last evening.

Dunboyne raced into a two point lead in the opening three minutes and although Sinéad McCormack pulled one back from play the visitors added a further three points before the tenth minute had elapsed. Two points from Marion Farrelly and a point from Seona Lynch after some good foraging work by Alicia Curtis reduced the deficit to a point on 12 minutes.

Dunboyne dominated the next 15 minutes despite some solid goalkeeping by Sarah Bradley they still managed 1-5 without reply, the goal coming from the penalty spot. Marion Farrelly blasted to the back of the net on 27 minutes but the visitors added another major to lead by 2-9 to 1-4 at the break.

Any hopes of a big comeback by St. Michaels were significantly dented when the visitors nabbed their third goal just 40 seconds into the second half. St. Michaels did respond with a point from Seona Lynch but Dunboyne were moving the ball well all over the pitch and added a further 13 points in the second period while Seona Lynch (0-1) and McCormack (1-1) completed the second half scoring for the home side.

Team & scorers: Sarah Bradley; Aine Sheridan, Laura Halpin, Marita Rogers; Emma McDonnell, Hayley Doyle, Lorraine Curtis; Clare Halpin, Megan O’Brien; Seona Lynch (0-3), Erin Lynch, Alicia Curtis; Sinéad McCormack (1-2), Marion Farrelly(1-2), Yvonne Farrelly.

Syddan

ALL SQUARE IN THE ‘HILL

Saturday April 20th 2019, IFC Group B, Round 2
Full time: St. Michaels 2-16, Syddan 2-16,
Half time: St. Michaels 1-07, Syddan 2-11.

One could sense a sigh of relief from both camps at the final whistle when this second round Intermediate Group B clash ended all square in the excellent facilities of Meath Hill on Saturday evening last, but if the truth be known, both sides will be ruing the fact that they had ample opportunities to collect both points especially Syddan who held a 9 point lead two minutes into the second period.

It was a goal 40 seconds into the game scored by the industrious Oran Meehan when he capitalized with a fisted finish from Shane McDonnell’s lofted delivery that opened the games scoring. However St. Michaels failed to build on that lead while Syddan were non perturbed by the score and by the tenth minute had posted four unanswered points to take the lead which they retained up to the 58th minute.

The first of Syddan’s brace of goals which both resulted from defensive errors in the St. Michaels goalmouth came on 25 minutes and the second quickly followed three minutes later for a 2-10 to 1-7 lead. Shane McCormack, Christopher Drew and Ciaran Lynch added early points for St. Michaels. Lynch was first to react when a Paddy Clarke effort came back off the upright on 24 minutes, McCormack and Ray Reilly posted two further points before the short whistle, however it was the men in green and gold who held a commanding 2-11 to 1-7 interval lead.

The Syddan men won the throw-in and moved up-field to split the posts for their 12th minor, they added another point two minutes later for a 9 point advantage. Shane McCormack converted two St. Michaels frees to keep his side in touch but Syddan also converted a free to leave 8 points still separating the sides. The excellent Paddy Clarke found Davy Lynch in space and he fired over a mighty effort from 40m out for a 7 point game. Then came the games turning point, Syddan lost their no 12, Patrick Farrelly to a red card and the wheels fell off their wagon, Ciaran Lynch then lofted a high effort between the posts before that man Oran Meehan blasted to the corner of the net for the second time to reduce Syddan’s advantage to just 3 points. The introduction of Paddy Tobin and the outstanding work rate of Davy Lynch, Paddy Clarke and Lee Morris paid dividends for the St. Michaels lads as another Davy Lynch effort from play and two frees from McCormack levelled the match on 52 minutes. St. Michaels were now in full control with Clarke, Morris, Meehan and Davy Lynch causing havoc for the Syddan defence however their tendency to over elaborate in their build up play wasn’t always their best policy as they sent a series of scoreable efforts wide of the posts and got turned over on several occasions however Syddan failed to capitalize on their mistakes as they went 29 minutes of the second half without raising a flag.
Shane McDonnell combined with Ciaran Lynch for his 4
th point before he sent over his and his sides final score of the match to go two in front with 2 minutes of normal time remaining. Syddan dug deep and a point from a free in the first minute of injury time gave them a slim lifeline and with the final kick of the ball in the 3rd minute of added time they drew level much to the relief of their management and supporters. St. Michaels management and supporters would have taken a draw at half time, but deep down they’ll know they should have left Meath Hill with both points.

St. Michaels team and scorers:
Darren O’Connell; Ciaran O’Reilly, Sam Briody, Daithí O’Reilly; Paddy Clarke, Christopher Drew (0-1) Ben Reilly; David Lynch (0-2), Matthew Halpin; Oran Meehan (2-1), Lee Morris, Ray Reilly (0-1); Shane McCormack (0-6, 5f), Shane McDonnell, Ciaran Lynch (0-5 1f).

Bective

A FEAST OF GOALS IN CASTLETOWN

Friday April 5th 2019,
IFC Group B, Round 1
Full time: St. Michaels 4-12, Bective 4-09.
Half time: St. Michaels 3-04, Bective 2-04.

St. Michaels finished strongly to see off Bective with three points to spare in this entertaining Meade Potato Company IFC match played in Castletown last evening. The winners needed a late goal from Shane McCormack to see off an inspired comeback from the Bective men and eventually seal an opening round Group B win.

St. Michaels opened the scoring with a point from Shane McDonnell in the opening minute, however Bective opened their account with a goal 40 seconds later and although Oran Meehan fired over his sides second point four minutes later Bective hit the back of the net for a second time with a rasping shot on six minutes to gain an early four point advantage. St. Michaels then took control for the next 7 minutes with Davy Lynch pointing, Meehan then collected a fine pass from McDonnell and rattled the back of the net from 8m out to level matters and when a shot on goal from McDonnell was deflected, it fell kindly for McCormack who came in from the right wing and coolly slotted the ball low under the advancing goalkeeper to regain the lead after 12 minutes play. Bective kept the scoreboard ticking with 2 points, one from a free before Ciaran Lynch opened his account from a free on 21 minutes and he followed that up with his sides third major minutes later when he latched on to a Matthew Halpin effort that came back off the upright and he gave the Bective keeper no chance for a five point lead. Bective however refused to lie down and their efforts yielded a further two points before the interval to reduce the St. Michaels lead to to just 3 points, 3-4 to 2-4.

Within three minutes of the restart Oran Meehan had stretched his sides lead to four points, but again lapses in the St. Michaels rearguard allowed Bective back into the game with their third goal, however they didn’t build on that score as two pointed frees from Ciaran Lynch settled his sides nerves and a further point apiece from McCormack and Lynch opened up a 3-9 to 3-5 gap between the sides entering the final quarter. But once again the Bective lads showed plenty of heart and in a three minute spell drew level after posting 1-2 without reply. The situation was beginning to look ominous for the St. Michaels lads who had been in this situation before in league matches, and especially when Bective went one in front with only five minutes left on the clock, however a foul on Ben Reilly was punished by Ciaran Lynch who calmly split the posts, Bective replied from play to go back in front but when the 40 “something” year old Daithí O’Reilly made his way up from corner back to send one over from play to draw level didn’t motivate or shame his younger team mates nothing would, and a well struck point from Davy Lynch put his side back in front and although Bective drew level again there was still time for St. Michaels to launch another attack when Ciaran Lynch sent a high ball into the Bective square, in rushed Shane McCormack to tap it over the head of the Bective ‘keeper for the all important winning goal.
Although the holes that leaked the four goals will need to be plugged before the next round, the character shown by the St. Michaels players to get this result was exemplary, each man gave their all and it made for a thoroughly enjoyable game of football, well done lads.

St. Michaels team and scorers:
Darren O’Connell; Daithí O’Reilly (0-1), Sam Briody, Ciaran O’Reilly; Paddy Clarke, Christopher Drew, Ben Reilly; Davy Lynch (0-2), Matthew Halpin; Oran Meehan (1-2), Cian Sheridan, Ray Reilly; Shane McCormack (2-1), Shane McDonnell (0-1), Ciaran Lynch (1-5).

AFL Dunderry

NO LUCK IN THE DEERPARK

Sunday March 10th 2019,

AFL Division 2, round 5
Full time: St. Michaels 4-06, Dunderry 0-20,
Half time: St. Michaels 2-02, Dunderry 0-11.

St. Michaels failed to christen their new pitch with a win as their losing streak continued in the first adult match to be played in the Deerpark in Carlanstown on Sunday morning after Dunderry’s pitch was deemed unplayable following recent rain.
Dunderry started well and by the eight minute had three points to their name and a strong cross wind made play difficult, but both teams coped admirably producing an entertaining contest for the few hardy souls that turned out to spectate. The home side broke their duck when a high lobbing ball from Oran Meehan into the Dunderry square beat David Jennings for the opening goal and the leveller for St. Michaels on 10 minutes. Meehan then became the provider when he found Paddy Tobin in open space and he made no mistake from 6m out for his second major at the end of the first quarter. The home sides opening point also came from Tobin who performed quite well throughout to give his side a four point cushion after 18 minutes.
Back came Dunderry and in a four minute spell sent over as many points to level the match for the second time, Tobin once again split the posts with a great effort to go back in front however the lead was short lived as the visitors finished the half stronger to lead by 0-11 to 2-2 at the interval.

St. Michaels cause wasn’t helped when they lost Sam Briody to a red card two minutes into the second half as Dunderry stretched their lead to 4 points. Shane McDonnell settled his sides nerves with two well taken points from play but the visitors hadn’t gone away as they posted another minor to still leave three between the sides, a Shane McCormack converted free and another Meehan goal put his side 3-5 to 0-13 to the good heading towards the end of the third quarter. Dunderry however kept plugging away posting some well taken points with ease as the burden of playing with a man down began to take its toll on the St. Michaels lads as the visitors used the extra man wisely but they did managed to find their well marked target man Oran Meehan once more and he obliged by completing his hat-trick to go one in front with eight minutes left on the clock. A converted Dunderry free two minutes later left the match all square and they went two in front in another two minute spell before Ronan Lynch pulled one back but time ran out as the visitors posted the final point of the match in the first minute of injury time. St. Michaels will rue the fact that they could only manage 5 points from play for the entire hour in comparison to their opponents who posted 15 from play.

St. Michaels team and scorers:
Darren O’Connell; Harry Dunne, Sam Briody, Ciaran O’Reilly; Ray Reilly, Christopher Drew, Ben Reilly; Matthew Halpin, David Lynch; Shane McCormack (0-1 f), Shane McDonnell (0-2), Paddy Tobin (1-2); Oran Meehan (3-0), Peter O’Connell, Ronan Lynch (0-1).
