Duleek Bellewstown

OPENING POINTS FOR THE “MICHAELS”

Sunday February 10th 2019,
AFL Division 2, round 3
Full time: St. Michaels 1-12, Duleek Bellewstown 1-09,
Half time: St. Michaels 1-05, Duleek Bellewstown 1-05.

St. Michaels collected their first points of the campaign in this closely contested and entertaining contest played in blustery conditions in Carlanstown on Sunday morning. In the end it was probably a little too close for comfort but there was no denying that the St. Michaels lads deserved their victory as they hung on for dear life as referee Eamonn Barry played 10 minutes of injury time at the end of the game, there was also 9 minutes of added time at the end of the opening half.

David Wright’s men started the game in a positive manner with Oran Meehan firing over the black spot after only 30 seconds, further points from frees from Shane McCormack and Peter O’Connell gave his side a three point lead. Then in the ninth minute Meehan gave an excellent ball into McDonnell who had oceans of space in front of goal and he unleashed an unstoppable volley to the roof of the net past the outstretched Anthony Dowling between the visitors posts.
However Duleek Bellewstown recovered quickly from this body blow and from the kick-out they moved the ball up field and floated a high ball into the St. Michaels square and amidst the throng of bodies the ball took an unlucky ( for St. Michaels ) deflection into the net. The visitors leveled the match for the first time at the end of the opening quarter after sending over three unanswered points, they then went in front for the first time with a point on 17 minutes but a converted McCormack free restored parity for St. Michaels but Duleek Bellewstown went back in front with a point almost immediately. A quick free from McCormack to O’Connell who returned to McCormack who made no mistake with his effort to leave the sides on level terms at 1-05 apiece at the interval.

St. Michaels took control at the start of the second half with a point apiece from McDonnell, O’Connell and McCormack in the opening five minutes however they then took a 15 minute siesta as their opponents split the posts with three unanswered points to level the match for the third time at 1-08 apiece. In fairness the swirling wind did make scoring difficult for both teams but it made no difference to the excellent marksmanship of Shane McCormack who put two over from frees in as many minutes for a two point cushion midway through the fourth quarter. Exchanges between both teams were very tight at this stage of the game but a good effort from O’Connell put three points between the sides on 58 minutes, Duleek Bellewstown made it a two point game once again in the third minute of added time however O’Connell had the last say floating one over from out on the right in the 6th minute of added time much to the delight of the home support.

This win is a huge positive for this young St. Michaels team who’s defence were strong and disciplined especially in the final 10 minutes when Duleek Bellewstown went looking for those all important scores, Davy Lynch and Matthew Halpin appear to compliment each other at midfield while the attack is full of fire power however there will be tougher tests ahead and one swallow never made a summer, we need to be patient, this is “a work in progress” by the management team.

St. Michaels team and scorers:
Darren O’Connell; Harry Dunne, Daithí O’Reilly, Alan Reilly; Christopher Drew, Sam Briody, Ben Reilly; Matthew Halpin, David Lynch; Shane McCormack (0-6 3f), Peter O’Connell (0-4, 1f), Ray Reilly; Oran Meehan (0-1), Shane McDonnell (1-1), Patrick Tobin.

St. Michaels / Nobber  Overcome Oldcastle

Saturday February 2nd 2019
U-15 Leinster League. Round 1

Full time: St. Michaels/Nobber 9-15, Oldcastle 7-11,
Half time: St. Michaels/Nobber 3-10, Oldcastle 5-06.

The north Meath combination of St. Michaels and Nobber had to dig deep to see off a determined Oldcastle side which only finally allowed them to get away deep into the fourth quarter of this entertaining first round Leinster League match played in Carlanstown on Saturday afternoon.

Oldcastle were first on the board with a goal after 90 seconds however Conor Owens opened the home sides account on two minutes and this score was quickly followed by a well taken goal from Jakub Bidinski, Declan Reilly added a further major at the end of the first quarter. The scores kept raining in from both sides and it was Aaron Gaffney who closed off the half with his first major to leave the St. Michaels / Nobber outfit trailing by just two points at the interval 3-10 to 5-6.

Oldcastle extended their lead to three points immediately after the restart and that lead was stretched to 6 points 30 seconds later with their 6th goal of the match, however Jakub Bidinski pulled it back to a three point game with his second major on 34 minutes. Scores began to flow from the home side with JoJo Ogungbe, Cathal Walsh and Bidinski all getting on the scoreboard to edge their side in front for the first time and further scores from Jamie Murray, Gustas Povecivios and Aaron Gaffney put the game out of Oldcastle’s reach even though they finished their scoring with a converted penalty and a point from play.

St. Michaels / Nobber team & scorers:

Meath Hill ACFL

ST. MICHAELS FAIL TO GET OVER THE “HILL”

Sunday February 3rd 2019,
AFL Division 2, round 2

Full time: Meath Hill 1-10, St. Michaels 1-09,
Half time: Meath Hill 0-09, St. Michaels 0-01.

What looked like it was going to be joy for the St. Michaels lads turned to frustration in a matter of seconds in this division 2 encounter in Meath Hill on Sunday morning when the concession of a penalty in the third minute of injury time denied them their first brace of points in this campaign.

The Carlanstown Kilbeg combination will want to forget their opening half performance when a pointed free from Oran Meehan after he himself was grounded was all they could muster, but in fairness to the Meath Hill lads at least two of their players players would close down the St. Michaels men when they got on the ball resulting in turn-overs. In conditions that were as good as could be hoped for in February the home side went in front early scoring in the fourth minute and followed up with a further eight points (3f) to lead by 0-9 to 0-1 at the interval.
The second half was a different story however as the St. Michaels lads came out with renewed vigor, obviously looking to redeem their first half performance. The St. Michaels man of the match Peter O’Connell opened the half with two pointed frees and second half substitute Ciaran Lynch split the posts from play to reduce the deficit to five points, however the “Hill” added what was to be their only point of the half on 39 minutes to leave 6 points between the sides. Five minutes later a great lay-off from Lynch to O’Connell resulted in the latter blasting to the roof of the net to reduce the deficit to three points. O’Connell, Lynch and Meehan each added a point to level matters on 52 minutes and to transform the tie. The St. Michaels lads were now oozing confidence on the pitch and took on their rivals with a new found energy, running at them from all angles as Shane McDonnell pointed from play and Oran Meehan sent one over from a free for a two point cushion on 57 minutes. However the home side came back to steal their thunder as they kept plugging away and a high ball into the visitors square on 63 minutes resulted in a scramble and a foul was committed which resulted in a converted penalty which gave the home side both points.

St. Michaels team and scorers:
Darren O’Connell; Harry Dunne, Daithí O’Reilly, Alan Reilly; Christopher Drew, Paddy Clarke, Ben Reilly; Matthew Halpin, Shane McCormack; Paddy Tobin, Peter O’Connell (1-3, 2f), Lee Morris; Oran Meehan (0-3, 2f), Shane McDonnell (0-1), Ben Tobin.

Sub: Ciaran Lynch (0-2) for Ben Tobin 35minutes.

Ballinabrackey ACFL

ST. MICHAELS FALL AT FIRST HURDLE

Sunday January 27th 2019,
AFL Division 2, round 1
Full time: St. Michaels 0-07, Ballinabrackey 0-12,
Half time: St. Michaels 0-04, Ballinabrackey 0-5.

The long journey from Ballinabrackey proved fruitful for the visitors as they made a flying start to their division 2 campaign over a youthful St. Michaels side in a bitterly cold and windy Carlanstown on Sunday morning.

St. Michaels had wind advantage in the opening half but failed to make any use of it as their tally of four points was shared by Shane McCormack and Shane McDonnell with only two coming from play while at the other end Ballinabrackey made better use of their opportunities firing over five points, four from play to lead by one at the interval 0-5 to 0-4 despite having played into a strong biting wind.

New manager David Wright had it all to do with his players during the interval, however the “Bracks” emerged for the second half with all guns blazing, splitting the posts with a brace of points in the opening three minutes, Shane McCormack pulled one back with a pointed free on 35 minutes but the “Bracks” could do no wrong and kept adding to their account with a further six points, four from frees as they piled the pressure on the home sides back line. Shane McDonnell added a further two points from frees to complete the home sides tally, however the large home support will be disappointed with their sides poor return of only two points from play for the entire match.

St. Michaels team and scorers:
Darren O’Connell; Harry Dunne, Sam Briody, Ben Reilly; Christopher Drew, , Paddy Clarke, Brian Reilly; Matthew Halpin, Shane McCormack (0-3, 2f); Paddy Tobin, David Lynch, Ray Reilly; Oran Meehan (0-1f), Shane McDonnell (0-3,2f), Ronan Lynch.

Sub: Lee Morris for Ronan Lynch.
