John Carpenter, Honorary President of St. Michaels GFC & past player of Carlanstown GFC.

John Carpenter

John Carpenter

The Local community and parish’s of Kilbeg and Carnaross bade farewell to a true gentleman with the passing of John Carpenter from Knockglass on November 27th 2014. John worked all his life on the farm and was an expert when it

came to anything got to do with cattle. John supported the GAA all his life and lined out in goals in the 1960’s and ’70’s for Carlanstown and when his playing days were over he took to team management and selector with both Carlanstown and St. Michaels. In later years John was elected an honorary President of St. Michaels GFC and was an avid supporter up until his health began to fail.

Laura Yore, ex St. Michaels ladies player, club mate and friend to many.

It was the evening of the 26th of August 2014 when the news began to filter through of the sad and sudden death of a great friend and past player with St. Michaels ladies, Laura Yore. Although Laura was only a month into her 23rd year on this earth she had retired from Gaelic football early to concentrate on her studies in NUI in Galway, but she didn’t leave empty handed, she mostly played between the posts but could also fill outfield positions when the need arose and she collected a handful of medals, both league and championship in different

grades while playing with St. Michaels. Whenever you met up with Laura she always had a big smile on her face, she loved getting up to a bit of devilment and fun and she had the ability to light light up the darkest day with her vivacious and trademark smile and her infectious laugh. She was also a gifted singer and musician and on her weekend trips home to Carnaross she always made herself available to play her guitar and sing the night away at functions all around North Meath, and if you were in need of a disco she could fill that role as well, a truly talented girl who is sadly missed in the Carnaross, Carlanstown and Kilbeg communities. Heartfelt sympathy is extended to Laura’s parents Eugene & Angela, her extended family and her many many friends. May Laura rest in peace.

Annie Gaffney, Honorary President of St. Michaels GFC.

St. Michaels GFC and the people of the parish of Kilbeg and surrounding areas were saddened by the news of the unexpected death of Annie Gaffney on April 6th 2014 . Annie was a popular and well known lady in the area and was also a much loved

President of St. Michaels GFC. A native of Lissycasey in Co. Clare Annie never lost her enthusiasm for her native county and

Annie Gaffney

Annie Gaffney

was the happiest woman in Carlanstown last September when Clare lifted the Liam McCarthy Cup in Croke Park, however it was her adopted club of Carlanstown and later the amalgamated clubs of Kilbeg & Carlanstown now known as St. Michaels that was the apple of her eye as she watched with great pride and satisfaction her sons, grandsons and great grandsons tog out in the team colours down the years. She was an avid supporter of our club and rarely if ever missed a game.
Annie was one of “The Golden Girls” and was predeceased by her life long buddies Chris Collins and Kathleen “Babby” Briody, they are now together again and I feel that there will be a lot of chit-chat between them tonight when they sit down for their usual “half one”.
We have all lost a very dear friend.

Rosemary Regan an Appreciation

On Wednesday evening, 27th August 2008, the Regan family of Gravelstown, Carlanstown, went into mourning following the death of Rosemary Regan. Rosemary was the wife of Christy, a former player, selector and trainer of St. Michaels GFC, and mother of Nigel and Dáithí, former Meath players, Kenneth and Aisleen, a former Meath ladies player. Our club can only

imagine the pain, suffering and loss they have felt and we would like to extend our sympathy over the loss of a truly dedicated member and supporter.Rosemary was a person whose life revolved around her family and St. Michaels. During the years when her children attended school she spent time on both the Parents Committee and the Community Games Committee. It was from this time that the plea for a ladies football team emerged. For a number of years that team was highly successful and Rosemary was also a player and selector. In 2007, the ladies team was reformed with Rosemary’s help and is once again successful with their recent championship win, of which Rosemary would be very proud.Within St. Michaels, apart from being one of our top sellers for any lotto or fund raising ticket, she also found time to act on the club committee, represent the club as PRO, wash jerseys and if any repairs were necessary they were always ready for the next game.In recent years Rosemary was also actively involved with the over 60’s Youth Club Committee which was founded by Fr. Brendan Corrigan PP. The club, which is based in our clubhouse, has provided a social outlet for our senior citizens and there was nothing Rosemary loved more than the annual Christmas party. Rosemary never sought the limelight, she liked to see others enjoy success and congratulations, and she was proud just to be involved as part of a team working in the background.  On the day of her funeral, which was one of the largest in recent years, we formed a guard of honour and afterwards in the clubhouse where refreshments were served, there were many photographs which brought back fond and happy memories of Rosemary. Through this small dedication we would like to publicly express our heartfelt sympathy to Rosemary’s mother Rose, brothers, sisters, husband Christy, sons Nigel, Dáithí, Kenneth and daughter Aisleen.
We would also like to thank the representatives of the various Meath County Board and many GAA clubs who attended and expressed their sympathies.
Rosemary may be gone from us, but she will never, ever be forgotten.

Fr. Patrick Adams, Kilbeg PP and Honorary President of St. Michaels GFC.

The passing of Fr. Patrick Adams on the 29th December 1996 came as a profound shock to the parishioners of Kilbeg and Staholmog where he had ministered as Parish Priest for 25 years following an earlier term as a curate in the 1940’s, A dear friend had been called to God.

Fr. Patrick Adams

Fr. Patrick Adams

The memory of the saintly Fr. Adams will long remain in the parish, where his serenity, wit and ready smile, as well as his child likeness, were impressed deeply on parishioners.
At the funeral Mass, Bishop Smith spoke of the simple and humble life of Fr. Paddy, which had made a deep impact on all who had come into contact with him.
The deceased’s first cousin Fr. Coleman delivered the homily outlining Fr. Paddy’s work in the Kilbeg parish which included the building of a new school in Kilbeg and an extension to Carlanstown school plus the refurbishment of the two churches in Kilbeg and Staholmog. He also renovated Kilbeg old school for use as a Community Hall.
It is a measure of Fr. Adams popularity that he is still spoken of and remembered by the people of Kilbeg parish in this year of Our Lord 2015. Fr. Adams was truly a very saintly man, may he rest in peace.
