MFC Shield Final

TITLE FOR ST. MICHAELS / NOBBER

Tuesday October 29th 2019
MFC division 3 Shield final.

Full time: St. Michaels/Nobber 3-11, Moynalty/Carnaross 1-10,
Half time: St. Michaels/Nobber 2-04, Moynalty/Carnaross 1-05.

A goal apiece from Joe Tierney and substitute JoJo Ogunube in a devastating 90 second burst just prior to the half time whistle powered the St. Michaels / Nobber combination to an impressive victory in this LMFM division 3 Shield final over near neighbours Moynalty/Carnaross in ideal conditions in Castletown last evening.

Those green flags effectively brought the St. Michaels / Nobber side back into the game as they trailed by 0-4 to 1-5 up to that point and looked in disarray all over the pitch but following their half time team talk they grew in confidence after the re-start.

The first quarter hadn’t given any indication of what was to come, it was nip and tuck throughout with both sides playing a lot of possession football but the Moynalty / Carnaross lads made more use of their chances and led by 0-4 to 0-1 after 15 minutes. The next 2 minutes yielded a further 1-1 for them and a seven point lead and things began to look bad for the eventual winners, however it’s tough for young teams to keep that level of consistency going throughout a game and the St. Michaels / Nobber lads were able to pounce as they upped the tempo just a fraction at the same time the Moynalty / Carnaross side dipped, points flowed from Lorcan McEntee (2) and Paddy Fitzsimons (1) before Ogunube and Tierney found the back of the net for a 2-4 to 1-5 interval lead as the eventual losers failed to raise a flag for the remaining 15 minutes of the half.

The Moynalty / Carnaross lads levelled the match in the opening five minutes of the new half, meanwhile the St. Michaels / Nobber side built a lead they were never really going to let slip and it started with Joe Tierney’s opening minor from a free. McEntee, Fitzsimons and Ogunube followed suit, two quick points from the eventual losers halted the slide before Ogunube gave James Carpenter no chance between their posts for a 3-8 to 1-9 lead. Tierney and McEntee followed with a minor apiece as the game began to go through the motions with the fizz now gone as Lorcan McEntee who opened his sides scoring with a point in the first half, closed it from a free in the 56 minute.

There were exceptional performances all over the pitch for the winners, especially in the second half where the ‘keeper Niall McMahon and all his backs kept the opposing forwards at bay, while at midfield Jack Dunne & Jakup Bidinski worked their socks off. All the forwards contributed in the attacking third of the pitch in what was an entertaining match played in good spirits throughout.
